Howard Gregory, newly-elected Archbishop of the Church in the Province of\nthe West Indies (CPWI) and Bishop of Jamaica &amp; The Cayman Islands, received\na warm welcome from clergy and lay members of the Church on his return to the\nisland yesterday (May 31) following a week-long Provincial Synod in Trinidad\nand Tobago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Archbishop Gregory\nemerged from the Terminal Building, he was greeted by the sound of a church\nbell and was applauded by the members, several of whom hoisted congratulatory\nposters. Veteran trombonist, Calvin &#8220;Bubbles&#8221; Cameron, rounded off\nthe tribute with a moving rendition of the song &#8220;You raised me up.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to that, the Archbishop,\nwho was accompanied by the Rt. Rev. Leon Golding, Suffragan Bishop of Montego\nBay and Mrs. Jacqueline Mighty, Diocesan Secretary, hosted a media briefing in\nthe Airport&#8217;s VIP Lounge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his opening\nremarks, The Venerable Justin Nembhard, Archdeacon for the Montego Bay Region,\nwho chaired the proceedings, pledged the wholehearted support of the Diocese\nfor the Archbishop in his work across the Province. The\nCPWI comprises eight Dioceses, namely: The Diocese of Barbados; the Diocese of\nBelize; the Diocese of Guyana; the Diocese of Jamaica &amp; The Cayman Islands;\nthe Diocese of Northeastern Caribbean and Aruba; the Diocese of The Bahamas and\nthe Turks and Caicos Islands; the Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago; and the\nDiocese of The Windward Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highlights of the\nSynod included the development of an Action Plan which Archbishop Gregory said\nwas aligned with the focus on Intentional Discipleship in the ministry of the\nAnglican Church and the lives of its members. The challenges in engaging\ndiscipleship among youth in the technological age was among the areas discussed.\nHe commended the Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago which contracted the services\nof Consultants to assist with the design of the Plan; and who will facilitate\nits implementation across the Province.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With respect to the\nadvancement of women in the Ordained Ministry, the Archbishop said delegates\napproved the process for the consecration of women as Bishops.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Synod also passed\na resolution supporting the stance adopted by CARICOM for a peaceful internal\nresolution to the social and political crisis in Venezuela, in the context of\nChristian hospitality. Other issues addressed included poverty and economic\ndisparity in Caribbean society; as well as legislation on abortion and\nmarijuana. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Archbishop Gregory identified the urgent need to create a stable\nfinancial framework for the 275 year-old Codrington College in Barbados as one\nof the critical imperatives for his administration.
