[ACNS, by Rachel Farmer] The church of Uganda’s first female provost was installed this week on Wednesday (10 July) at All Saints’ Cathedral in Kampala. Dr Rebecca Margaret Nyegenye was ordained in 1997 in Bukedi Diocese and was assistant vicar at St John’s Church in Busia, before moving to Uganda Christian University as a chaplain’s assistant in 2002. In 2012 she became the university’s chaplain.
Dr Nyegenye, whose father was a clergyman, was born and raised in the eastern district of Busia and was the second-eldest child to the late James Efumbi and Janet Efumbi.
She describes her passions as discipleship, pastoral care and counselling, evangelism, preaching and mentoring. She is also undertaking research on biblical leadership.
Dr Nyegenye decided to give her life to Christ while watching the film, “The Passion of Christ”. She said it was seeing the suffering and agony Jesus went through to save mankind that led her to take the step of faith.
The new provost trained at theological college in Buwalasi and went on to complete a Master of Arts in Theology from the Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in the US. She also has a doctorate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
She is married to Wilson Nyegenye, who is the National Equipment and Supply Chain Coordinator in the National Laboratory Services of the Ministry of Health and they have three children.
The Primate of the Church of Uganda, Archbishop Stanley Ntagali, presided at the service of installation, when Dr Nyegenye’s assistant, Captain David Serunjogi, was also installed.
